Yeh we are a bit spoiled in Northumberland! I took a few pics of my trip there today, if anyone wants a look link
Enjoy! – I hope it helps someone painting model fortifications! |

Well, that was quite enjoyable! Not as much as actually being there, but close. Thank you much for sharing! |

Thanks, Herk. I think that's the castle I saw from the train, on the way up to Edinburgh. Unfortunately that's as close as I got. |

There are some interesting pillboxes quite nearby to the castle with non-standard construction. |

An impressive site. Was this castle "slighted" by the Roundheads in their manic destructive tour of Britain? |

English Heritage say: 'In the late 15th and 16th centuries, Dunstanburgh Castle was in decline. Too large and expensive to maintain, its decaying walls provided a tempting source of stone for other buildings, while its strategic weakness – lying too far from the Scottish border, and too distant from the main road – was all too apparent.' link Its generally a truism that Parliamentary forces used any well maintained defences. Poor Dunstanburgh suffered the fate of the Roman wall in getting its stone removed for building! |
