POTA … the third greatest movie of all time – inlgames.com/sots.wmv
Gamera vs. Anybody, so in this case … Viras

I was a kid when I saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The child catcher bit was massive creepy. This from a kid who grew up with stories of Baba Yaga and actual Grimm fairly tales.

The Power was deeply disappinting.

Science-fiction: "2001 – A Space Odyssey"
Fantasy: "Yellow Submarine" (actually my favorite fantasy movie of all time)

SF-"2001-A Space Odyssey"
Fantasy-"Yellow Submarine" as Fantasy, sure, I'll go with that. It's one of those hard to classify flicks.

Planet of the Apes!

glengarry608 Oct 2025 5:03 p.m. PST

Oh, stop it.
This is getting silly. 🙄

I agree with John the OFM.

Wargaming scene in Chitty chitty bang bang! HG Wells style!

2001: A Space Odyssey, though the ending of PotA was really heavy, man.

forrester09 Oct 2025 3:31 a.m. PST

Amazing how much genre output there was in just one year

Im not going to pick one as its apples and oranges

2001
However…
the opening credits for Barbarella get a special mention.

Are we really going to have a long multi-day Poll about every single year since they started making movies???
Unless the OP is deliberately trolling the system, which is always a good thing to do.

Who is going to start a Poll about 1973?

Grattan54 Supporting Member of TMP09 Oct 2025 9:09 a.m. PST

We should go by month too. The best Sci Fi film from March 1970

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP09 Oct 2025 10:10 a.m. PST

The OP is only proposing the one. This seemed a bang-up year to have a wide range of good choices, compared to the currently running 1983 with a broad range of bad choices.

Shorter list than '83 too; who knew the Editor could find so many obscure and un-nominated movies to pad that one out before it gets to the final round of Jedi vs. Wargames.

There's usually a long delay before polls run, so this isn't likely to be up in the immediate future.

I've noticed that there is usually a year between a Poll Suggestion and the start of a Poll. 🤷🙄

Science Fiction-
2001: A Space Odyssey/ The Planet of the Apes

Well, actually, not all of those title opened in '68.

Just sayin….

Just TVAG

I know three of these were based on books:

Blackbeard's Ghost
Flowers for Algernon (Charly)
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (by Ian Fleming)

I've read all but the last.

Personal logo piper909 Supporting Member of TMP09 Oct 2025 9:35 p.m. PST

2001: A Space Odyssey
Yellow Submarine
Planet of the Apes

Don't know/care about most of the others. Even Suzanne Pleshette couldn't save Blackbeard's Ghost.

Personal logo Saginaw Supporting Member of TMP10 Oct 2025 3:43 a.m. PST

I echo piper909's choices; for me, it's a tough call between 2001 and PotA. I've always liked Yellow Submarine.

Hollywood no longer seems to be able to make that many good movies in a year regardless of type of movie.

Personal logo John the OFM Supporting Member of TMP19 Oct 2025 4:39 p.m. PST

Hollywood is entirely consumed today with producing blockbusters. Movies that gross ONLY $400 USD million are considered failures.
