Hi folks,

I am currently working on a Black Tree Design German 7.5cm infantry gun and crew:

The main problem is with the guy on the right, with the shell. He seems to have something like a towel over his left shoulder and around the back of the neck. This is obviously deliberate and not a casting mistake. But I have no idea what this is supposed to be. It's not his Zeltbahn, as that is included rolled up under his mess kit. Did German shells come in some sort of bag? Given the size of the shell, I suspect this figure was made to crew a PAK 40, not an infantry gun, but I've had no luck finding a clue amongst PAK 40 crew equipment either..

I'm also confused about is the other two figures. They seem to have a leather (?) belt around their torso, perhaps some sort of Bricole arrangement for dragging the gun around. Again, I have no idea what these are supposed to look like. I assume some sort of leather color would be appropriate, but I really have no idea.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Lucky you, I am still waiting for 4 orders from Black Tree from a year ago, with still no contact from them!

I got it at a bring-and-buy at my local convention (NHMGS Enfilade), so I avoided their off-and-on service. As you say, I got lucky.

Not sure if these resources will help but from what they show, shells came in wicker containers or boxes, the straps used to haul the gun into position look like a dark leather, possibly even black.

The towel could be a standard issue hand towel. My guess is that it was used by the loader to wipe the shell down before loading?

Here's a good illustration of the detachment with the 'bricole' straps quite prominent. These were webbing later in the war but at the start they seem to have been dark brown leather. Though gunners do wipe down ammunition, could the 'towel' be a miscast strap?
