Facing off against the most powerful fleet in the world, the upstart Continental Navy could boast an impressive roster of intrepid, hard-fighting commanders: Lambert Wickes, Joshua Barney, John Paul Jones—but towering above them all, literally and perhaps figuratively as well, was a tall, burly Irishman: John Barry… Naval History Magazine: link |

Great story. What a commander! The accompanying painting (supposedly of the battle) appears to have an additional American flag on one of the British vessels, flying above the Union Jack. The blue field is present, but obscured. I admit to being ignorant of all flags used by the British Navy, but an on-line search has failed to turn up anything remotely similar. Here's another link with the full history of the Alliance (not all of it good prior to Barry), and her eventual fate. link |

Sadly, I wanted to find ships for the Continental navy but they just don't seem to exist. Just not interested in doing the Napoleonic/War of 1812 wars. |

There are a (very) few Continental ships available from NavWar (assuming they are still available). Just the Bon Homme Richard, Oliver Cromwell and Hancock. navwar.co.uk |
