"We might also consider a different PoD -- supposedly, the royal family had considered escaping to the fortress of Metz in the days or hours before the arrival of the mob at Versailles; what if they had taken this option? They are able to avoid being forced to move to Paris for the time being, but how does this affect their relationship with the Assembly? Does this kick of an earlier civil war?

Thinking on it, I'm not so sure a civil war would break out; in the OTL lead up to the escape to Varennes, Louis had been adamant that his forces would not "shed French blood", and I can't imagine him being more ruthless in this reduced scenario. If he's similarly pacifistic here, I imagine the move least likely to provoke a civil war would be to summon the Assembly to his new location, without making any backtracks on the work of the part few months (at least until they arrive). And if the Assembly were summoned in such a circumstance (as opposed to, say, 1791), I imagine they would comply…."
