Hi Guys. I am not a regular Rennaissance gamer. I've had some experience with video games and boardgames in this period but never mini games. So ever since I played the GMT boardgame "Lion of the North" in the 90s ive wanted to game the 1st Battle of Breitenfeld in miniature. What id be interested in then is a set of rules that are relatively easy to learn and play and that can handle a huge battle like this in a single evening. My only other requirements for any suggestions are: 1: Im not intetested in "DBR". 2: And no "grid movement" games please. Other than that I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks for any help! |

Liber Militum Tercios is what we use for our TYW battles, The ‘lite' version of the rules is free online so you can try them at no cost. I recommend them. |

Another free set, and specifically designed for fast-play big-battle gaming, is "Tilly's Very Bad Day": link (Even has an apropos title…) |

I play Liber Militum Tercios and I love them. I prefer them for battles a bit smaller than Breitenfeld. I used them for Fleurus and they worked but slowed down a bit with all of the units (I think we finished in about 3 hours). I like that each unit is a base and the mechanics are simple. They are hard to get although the lite version is free for download. I saw Breitenfeld played with a ruleset called Through the Square Window. I've read reviews and, while not my cup of tea, might be of interest to you. |

You can use the Twilight of Divine Right rules which are specifically aimed at doing large battles in this era with limited resources. They allow you to do full big battles easily. In addition to the rules there are a supplement for 'Eastern' battles and 6 scenario books – incuding Breitenfeld. They are available from link and here link . Plus others. |

I'd go for Twilight of Divine as mentioned above, the TYW scenario book includes a Brietenfeld scenario. Funnily enough I played 1st Brietenfeld the other day, but using Dominion of Pike and Shot, which is probably bit light weight for what you are after (I ran it three times!). |

Hi, I've played quite a lot of big 30TW battles using the "Through the Square Window" rules available from Caliver Books. They are simple, play very fast and give accurate results, and are especially useful for multiplayer games. Smaller battles can easily be done in a club night of around 3 hours or less. You can fight a big battle like Breitenfeld in about four or five hours hours although it requires a fairly big table and around 4 – 6 players. There is an order of battle for doing Breitenfeld with "Through the Square Window on the 17th Century Wargaming Facebook group. |
