A friend of ours passed away and the club stepped in to buy his collection from the estate. Sight unseen I bought 6 boxes of Renaissance armies, mostly Italian.

But its not a period I've ever gamed before and don't really know much about. I can organize the troops into units and ID some by the flags or standards.

Is there a good reference for telling these units apart?

A good starting point would be George Gush's "Renaissance Armies".

Like the WRG Armies and Enemies books, this is a companion to his WRG Renaissance rules.
Importantly, it was also a reference for figure manufacturers.

Funcken's Age of Chivalry ends with Renaissance (vol 2 of the 3 part series the most useful) and his uniforms through the Ages (Volume 1) have a few illustrations as well

The Madaxeman Blog as photos showing a lot of comparisons

Osprey and some of the other uniform plate series might help a bit as well

Sorry for the loss of your friend EC! Nice that he leaves a legacy of his passion behind in your club.

If you know what rules the person preferred, then taking a look at the relevant army lists might give a hint.

If they are for late 15th or early 16th century Italy, then some of the units might expect to see include:

- heavy cavalry with lances
- mounted crossbows
- foot crossbowmen
- foot arquebusiers

You might also encounter the odd unit of swordsmen, pikemen, Venetian archers or Albanian stradioti.

Here's a PDF source for Gush's Renaissance Armies.

I agree with the proposed reference books, EC. But remember there's very little by way of uniform in period. It's more costume, really. So flags are going to be your best friends.
