A brilliant work by Soviet director Mikhail Romm, exploring this phenomenon… Those who are sensitive, prepare yourself for some very difficult footage… YouTube link

I watched a chunk of it. Interesting indeed, but, as you say, some unpleasant footage. I'll watch the rest later. |

Thank you Cuprum2. Intelligent, understated, subtle, with incredibly dry narration: Wiki – ROMM, Mikhail: Triumph over Violence 1965 The narration mentioned that certain Nazi Death Camps were only models for the ones that would be deployed beyond the Urals in order to deal with 60 millions of Russians. Chilling. --- Would ROMM have been able to make this film in this understated style whilst STALIN was still alive? --- Not in the same league, but similar in the indirectness: Wiki – GLAZER, Jonathan: The Zone of Interest 2023 |

Time would be my only constraint, not the content. But a Soviet pointing out Fascism while Communists murdered 100s of millions? link I need to find the time to watch in full |

Stoppage, according to Nazi plans, all Eastern Slavs were to be exterminated. Next after the Jews and Roma. It's important to understand that the territories beyond the Urals were planned for occupation by Japan… That's why Victory Day in World War II is celebrated with such grandeur in Russia. This is not even independence day – it is the day of the second birth of the people. I'm not sure this film could have been made during Stalin's time, if only because documentaries were almost never made back then. 14Bore, firstly, that's a huge stretch. Propaganda. You're confusing deliberate murder with accidents. Are you prepared to accept as murder committed by capitalists all the famines around the world where there were no communists? What about the famine in Ireland? In India during World War II? The nuclear bombing of Japanese cities and the massive bombing of German cities to exterminate non-combatants? And much, much more… Secondly, "communists" come in many different forms. From moderate social democrats to Trotskyists and "left communists." Lumping everyone together is a stupid propaganda ploy. It's like calling all patriots – nationalists, and democrats – "Sorosites." |

Got through whole video. 10s of millions put through the Gulag system, the Polish officers murdered at Katyn, Mao's Great Leap Forward or Stalin starving Ukrainians. Governments murdering their own citizens isn't accidents. |

How many Gulag prisoners were common criminals, and how many were political prisoners? What proportion of political prisoners were collaborators, responsible for the deaths of thousands of their fellow citizens? How many prisoners were there, for example, in the United States during the same period? The Gulag isn't a death camp, it's a place of imprisonment. They were no different from the Tsarist penal servitude. I'm lying – they were different. In the Gulag, prisoners weren't kept in shackles. The Gulag myth is overblown… The massacre of Poles in Katyn was investigated by the International Nuremberg Military Tribunal. The court established the guilt of German Nazis for this shooting. All accusations against the USSR for this massacre have no legal basis. It's an anti-Soviet myth. There was no deliberate famine of Ukrainians. This can easily be established by examining Polish newspapers of the same period. Poland was an independent state, but there was also famine in the steppe (Ukrainian) territories of that country… Another myth… Yes, I know, you won't believe it. But it's a fact. |

You need to read Gulag Archipelago, even the shorter 1 book than the full length 3. Hope we meet on better terms on the Napoleonic threads. |

I read this book back in Soviet times – in samizdat, secretly. But now I know that Solzhenitsyn, a former KGB informant, was a great liar, but made a good living off it. He was so afraid of the front that he deliberately chose to end up in the Gulag rather than fight in the war. If you're interested in writers from the Gulag, find books by Varlam Shalamov. He wrote as it really was. link |
