I am keen to organize units and play the official "The Sword in Gaul" variant that Larry Brom published in 2004. Has anyone here experience with this rules set? I am confused by how to assemble my basic units. For one thing, the numbers given don't add up for the Basic barbarian force (I can't get to 178 from what is written); and mainly, the reference to "sub-leaders" in each unit of 12 and 15 figures -- so does this mean units have individual Leaders as well as the designated Leaders for groupings? I'd value any other feedback about these rules, which were designed for the usual TS&TF skirmish-level battles of Caesar's campaigns. Is hidden movement a thing? And I'm leaning toward ignoring the testudo rules completely, unless a siege is being played. The testudo was not an open field formation. |

I think there were rules in 20th Anniversary Edition for hidden units, but they didn't move, they just appeared and charged. As for the specifics of tSiG I think the forces were meant to be suggestions. Fielding that entire force would be a big game. My recollection of many of Larry Brom's comments here are there on the internet and even in a direct email or two is that he generally said you should do it the way you like. I bought a *lot* of 15mm for this twenty year ago. Someday I'll paint them… This may not be the most helpful post, but this is probably all there is. |

Thanks for pitching in, Andrew! Every bit helps. I will keep all this in mind. I just found my old copy of "The Sword to Adventure", too, that lays out an alternate close combat system designed by the Jackson Gamers, and this looks also very intriguing -- I think it would work best for Ancients, pre-Gunpowder scenarios, in fact, altho' it seems to have been created for Modern variants, what with the mentions of grenades and SMGs. But I am going to modify it for The Sword in Gaul and see how it plays. |
