For our latest game we needed a BRM 1K with Ground Surveillance Radar (GSR). We used a odd vehicle last time but I remembered AOTRS Shipyard had one on file. So I printed 2 out for this game (1/144 of course). It comes with two turrets one with radar stowed in the hull for transport and one with it deployed.
This raised an issue I have never been able to resolve happily in my mind. That is marking vehicles in the mode in game. Now clearly with two turrets I could swap the turrets between stowed and Deployed but this costs time and is a distraction when under the intense pressure of a top level game. It falls like Buttoned or Un-buttoned tanks, you can mark it but is it worth it? As opposed to just remembering it especially as typically there are conditions when normally you would be one or the other so its academic in some ways. So it comes down to art over game to indicate the mode a vehicle is in. In the end I know what I will do, the vehicle will always be the one in travel mode. The deployed mode model is be too high for the box without removing it and I am too lazy for that. Where do you stand on the issue and at what scale? |

I have yet to play a game myself where the models had variant turrets readily available to change out as desired for the purposes of open / closed hatch or raised / lowered dish in your example. Here's what I'm guessing my preference would be: As time permits, swap the turret. How often is this really going to happen in a game? Probably not very much. If the turrets don't swap easily, either use a marker next to the vehicle indicating state or if its a friendly game without too much "stuff" on the battlefield, just declare it if it matters. I say if it matters because many rulesets won't have this granularity. |

The turrets of all my models swapeasily, not that I swap them often, It's thst our ruled, are more plausible in that AFV's likre the thing are required to turn their turrets, particularly when vision is restricted like when buttoned up . To make this practical for transport the turrens only come out at one angle, like Revell 1/72 plastic kits. |This make swapping turrets reasonably fast. Our rules certainly do not fall into what is typically a convention (US) style set of rules but the UK really has no equivannt of a US convention, most UK players in my experience play weekly so a higher level of simulation is prefered/desired/practical is prefered by some. We use AOTRS Shipyards STL's specifically as they are disaplined on getting actual scale models and having twist locked rotatable turrets. Touble is at 1/144, in a "serious" game there is a lot of stuff so adding the the marjer issue is non-trivual, plus we are not on the art side of wargaming, visual spectical is not high on the list of our requrements. This thread other than gatuetiou pictuers is about how you rate art vs game. |

I currently play company level games where each vehicle is a vehicle. Old glory has turrets where you can swap out a commander or a closed hatch. It doesn't happen often as most hatches are open but if their status changes and it is going to make a difference I absolutely change out to a closed hatch. One reasons is aesthetic but also to remove a marker on the board. Cheers |

Joe Legan – Good to see folk that actaully account for buttoned and un-buttoned, and I am impressed you take the time to swap turrets. |

As we cant model/represent everything, we abstract or fold in things. The things we keep in will take time and add to the load of working the mechanics of the game. Add in a need to .ake physical changes to the table top is only adding to that. Things like this im inclined to fold it into factors of the unit and circumstances, rather than make it a specific thing that the player is having to remember to and apply. I may allow a player to make a choice to work against the default. Ie the default one in combat is buttoned up. But a player can choose to unbutton for improve awareness but is increased risk. 🤷 |
