In building up the Carrier Air Group 5's units assigned to the USS Essex in 1951. The squadrons at the time were designated with the first digit matching the CAG number. Thus VF-51 (Panthers) VF-53 (Corsairs) and VF-54 (Skyraiders), the designator for the CAG 5 was the letter "S". On this cruise VF-172 was cross decked to the Essex replacing VF-52. The squadron was equipped with the new F2H Banshee, this was its first combat cruise. However VF-172, is still carrying the CAG designator "R", and did so for the entire cruise. I can't figure out which CAG VF-172 had been transferred from. Does anyone one know which CAG the "R" belongs to. | | khanscom | 20 Sep 2025 4:16 p.m. PST

Steve Ginter's book on the Banshee has photos of "R" marked Banshees of VF-172. These from the 1953- 54 Wasp. Another "R" Banshee depicted on 4/14/53 shows it tangled in the barrier aboard the F.D. Roosevelt. | | King Monkey | 21 Sep 2025 1:21 a.m. PST
