In building up the Carrier Air Group 5's units assigned to the USS Essex in 1951. The squadrons at the time were designated with the first digit matching the CAG number. Thus VF-51 (Panthers) VF-53 (Corsairs) and VF-54 (Skyraiders), the designator for the CAG 5 was the letter "S".

On this cruise VF-172 was cross decked to the Essex replacing VF-52. The squadron was equipped with the new F2H Banshee, this was its first combat cruise. However VF-172, is still carrying the CAG designator "R", and did so for the entire cruise.

I can't figure out which CAG VF-172 had been transferred from. Does anyone one know which CAG the "R" belongs to.

According to the web site Carrier Air Wings (gonavy.jp) and info from the US Navy historical center, Carrier Air Group-17 carried the designator R. The group was based in the Atlantic. VF-172 "Blue Bolts" was cross decked to the Essex (CV-9) for a tour in Korea from July 21, 1951 to March 25, 1952. It flew F2H-2's. At the same time CAG-17 was deployed on the FDR in the Med. VF-172 was redesignated VA-172 on Nov 1, 1955. It was disestablished Jan 15, 1971.
Some added info, VF-172 was transported from NAS San Diego to Hawaii on the Antietam (CV-36). VF-172 was then embarked on the Essex.
