A great book on the Marine Nationale.

His two early works on the French navy are excellent too.

I'd completement this work with "The French Flwwt; Ships Strategy and Operations 1870-1918" by Staglini & Consentio, and "THe Developement of a Modern Navy: The French Navy 1871-1904" by Ropp. These two books give the reasons the French did what they did, whiles Roberts is very good as a source of technical details on all the ships, down to river and lake gunboats.
