Tonight we had a venture into 'historical science fiction', wargaming an historical campaign set in the past of the future….???! This was based on Warhammer 30,000 the 'Horus Heresy'. We had heretic Iron Warriors of the IV Legion pitted against the loyalist Revenant Legion (later to be renamed Blood Angels). This game had a retro feel, albeit set in the future, although 10,000 years before the the 40,000 universe of contemporary times. Confused? You should be….

Looked at another way, I play historical SF when my Red Martians clash over Barsoomian canals, or when my Drylanders--who may or may not be Green Martians--raid a low canal town and run into Triplanetary Authority troops. Ah, there was a future! Lost cities! Fortune and glory! Beautiful princesses! I don't know how GW can sell a future in which success means "the Empire didn't fall this week." For that I can play late Romans. |
