It doesn't seem very safe for children….

What could possibly go wrong?

Kids back then were a tougher breed. At least the ones that survived were.

The game would have been more challenging if the cannon could fire back… ;-)

Played the updated version sometime around 1984 shooting at Star Wars figures with a BB gun at my buddy Darrel's house. I assure you, it is 1) Safe and 2) Crazy Fun.

Doubleones +1 – indeed, my dad and I played this type of game with my little green and gray plastic soldiers using BB guns and fire crackers. The only hazard was discovering my Guns of Navaronne played was quite tough and could ricochet BBs back at ya!

Hunting little green army men with a BB gun is downright fun.

well, I would use a rubber band gun against my plastic soldiers once upon a time.

We were too poor to afford BB guns so chunked pebbles at our little heroes.

Well, we did use to sell lawn darts

In the 80s, I also shot at little green army men with BB guns.

A friend and I would set up a row of army men on pavement and shoot them down starting at the outside and working in. Wherever we met, if we were on the other guy's side of the center line, we had shot more down with the same number of shots.

In those days I had a one-pump spring magazine BB gun. My friend had a much better multi-pump, even with adjustable sights. He could not understand how I was so much more accurate. I finally revealed my secret: shooting the pavement in front of the army man, so that the BB ricocheted back away at a low angle. There was a much larger target area to score a knockdown compared to direct fire.

If you do this, be sure there's a backstop to catch all your BBs. And be safe with firearms. Use the safety, don't put your finger on the trigger until ready to shoot, don't point at anyone, don't look down the barrel.
