"This is the AAR for the first Worthing Club game of the New Year. It takes place in and around the Ukrainian settlement of Tinovka in February 1944.The background is that following the failed Zitadelle offensive at Kursk the previous summer, the Soviets had pushed the Germans back. The latter planned to use the Dniepr river as a defensive line on which to stabilise the southern sector of the Eastern Front, part of the Panther-Wotan Line. By the beginning of December however, the Soviets had breached the river line in force and began planning their Dniepr-Carpathian Offensive. Because some German units were still holding on the the line of the Dniepr the Soviets spotted an opportunity to achieve a double encirclement similar to Stalingrad. Attacking on 24th January, the 1st Ukrainian Front from the North and the 2nd Ukrainian Front from the South, totalling over 330,000 troops, had by 28th January, trapped some 60,000 Germans in a pocket more or less centred on the town of Korsun…"
