I just got this figure recently:

You can't tell from the photo – but he's only got one shoe (left foot) – his other one is barefoot.

Did they really do that? If so why?

We recently had a thread on an amazing game at Big Muddy Historical Gaming Alliance…

Our Game Day East for August held at the spacious Impact Game Center was part of our continuing celebration of Naval Gaming Month with a real treat by Dave Murvihill as we traveled back to medieval times for high seas adventure using Cogs, Carracks & Caravels game rules and some of Dave's superbly crafted model ships.

But I can find no other reference to these rules on the internet. Are they available? Do we know anything else about them?

Thanks

And the bug strikes!
I did not post this to the Galleys forum

Andrew Walters16 Sep 2025 2:11 p.m. PST

Huh. That was the post with which I created this thread, and it's *second* in the thread?

I don't know anything about one-shoed Scotsmen.

I hope we both get our answers.

Ugh.

I think this happens when twopeople try and post at the same time.
I hit the complaint button just to alert editors that the bug had struck. I was also sure to mention I was not complaining about you – just the bug.

I've read that it was done for traction, making your casting more historical than the guidons I'm currently giving to British Napoleonic cavalry.

Andrew
I will check with the GM and see if I can track down some information.

Korvessa, I once got a Viking figure with only one shoe from Foundry. Remembering the story of Jason and the Argonauts, I asked here on TMP if anybody knew any Viking stories that might explain one shoe, but nobody did. So, I wrote Foundry. They didn't think the single shoe was deliberate. They said that greens sometimes take a beating in the post during the trip from sculptor to manufacturer, resulting in breakage. The folks at Foundry (in this case) try to reassemble the damaged green, but sometimes it doesn't work out as well as one might hope.

For Jason, the one shoe is part of the story; you might want to come up with a story that explains why he has just one shoe.

For what it's worth, I once stepped in deep, sucking mud and when I took the next step, my foot stepped while my shoe stayed behind in the mud.

Andrew,
I got an answer from the GM and he sent several files. Please email me at info@bmhga.com and I can get you what he sent.

RE: single shoe, you will find the same thing on the Old Glory Welsh figures. In the book Armies of the Middle Ages (I may be wrong on the title) they show some period drawings and said it was common for better footing.

When I built my Welsh force, I used putty/paint to create a shoe on the figure.

A shoe for each foot, Col Durnford? You'll spoil them. They'll start wanting regular rations next.
