Inch High Guy: link

I particularly liked this idea:

When I go to the bench, I put something away. When I get up from the bench, I put something away. This is a simple habit but it significantly reduces workbench clutter.

Nope. I would scare the hell out of my family if my desk ever looked like that. I've always wondered about people who have clean desks (either at work or for their hobbies).

I clean up or reorganize every year or two. Even so, I cannot get my work table that clean. I find my biggest obstacles or sources of disorganization are unfinished or stalled projects

Clean as you go, then you don't have to go clean (wisdom from a former boss of mine.)

How do you find anything on a desk like that?

Stryderg13 Sep 2025 7:59 p.m. PST

Well, if you are like me, you start 15 new projects and don't save any of them because they are on-going projects. It would take me about 10 to 'normalize' that desk.

More fun (?) to rummage thru the piles of stuff and projects on my desk evil grin

It reads as though he's finishing one project before starting another. Surely that can't be right?

Inspiring. Thanks.

Robert Piepenbrink for the win, though.

Mess is part of creativity but I'd have to agree that keeping a work area clean between sessions is sensible. I don't do 'tidy'; I do 'organised' – much more effective (sometimes).

My workbench is also my playing area so it is only temporarily cluttered with 'in progress' tasks and has to be cleared for a game.

My eldest daughter is both organised and tidy and was constantly nagging me about not being so. She could never accept that I could find what I needed most of the time but the thought of actively working on up to a dozen projects were just beyond her comprehension – 'tidy' doesn't work for that.
