I've seen plenty of illustrations of the summer uniform, long shirt/ smock with fringe. Was there a woollen winter version? Or in winter were the riflemen issued jackets? |

In 1812 the American rifles were issued with a bottle green coatees similar in cut to the line infantry for winter wear. Dissatisfied with the the poor quality of the green dyes of the time meant rifle regiments switched to grey coatees and pants in 1814. As these were not available to everyone in time for the 1814 summer campaign season some wore a grey sleeved vest jacket instead. The US Congress was too cheap to issue each man in the army with a greatcoat (other than 10 watchcoats per company for sentries) until after the war soldiers on the freezing Canadian frontier in winter often had to privately purchase blanket coats. |

In the South, riflemen either operated as consolidated company or onLy three or four per company. Their main task was to hunt game for the larger unit or scout the route of March. Most Tennessee volunteer units were State and county raised. So they were uniformly outfitted in hunting frocks. Georgia and Carolina troops had a mix of clothing. Troops from Mississippi had mixed dress as well. A few regular units wore the later dress with Belgic shako. White linen in summer and blue coats and gray wool trousers in the winter. Officers assigned to stockades in 1812 and before wore felt bell shako. More information on uniforms can be found in our booklet: Alabama Burning: The War of 1812. |
