It's the day after Labor Day, and the start of my annual Spooky Movie Fest. There's a number of good mummy movies out there. I'm partial to Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (based on Stoker's Jewel of the Seven Stars). And honourable mention to Abbot & Costello Meet the Mummy — the grand finale is great! |

The 1999 Mummy for me. But I'm not really much of a horror fan, so from the standpoint of this poll, I'm probably admiring it for the wrong reasons. |

Missing the We Want Our Mummy – 1939 (3 Stooges) link – a few more on this list |

I've seen the 1999 one and a old black-and-white one, possibly the 1932. I'm probably not the target audience for this poll. |

The 1999 reboot is good if you like modern action-adventure movies, sort of like Jurassic Park but with a mummy. Universal had various starts to rebooting The Mummy in fits and starts for about a decade. George Romero was in on two the starts, pity he didn't get to complete one, that would have been a horror movie. |

The Mummy 1999. The soundtrack alone makes it great. |

Back in the 90s one of the episodes of Amazing Stories TV series was called "The mummy's a daddy." It is gut- bustingly funny. Rarely laughed so hard in my life. |

Bubba-Hotep is great fun. Elvis, JFK in the body of a black man, both hiding out in an old folk's home with a secret ancient threat… what's not to love? The Mummy (1999) is also a fun movie, but it's "horror" only in the imagery— otherwise, it's an Indiana Jones flick with a re-skinned Indiana Jones… but still an entertaining watch. The original 1932 The Mummy is a classic, and true horror, but it's also kind of slow. The fascinating thing is that the film's premise of a mummy being a form of the undead (not really called such in the film) is the entire source of the idea; undead mummies are not an element in Egyptian folklore or mythology, from what I can tell. It just fits so well with the preservation efforts of the ancient Egyptians that it's easy to assume the idea is ancient, rather than Hollywood whole cloth! I'm gonna have to read about the others; I think I've seen the Hammer one (and wasn't impressed). |

The idea of undead mummies certainly wasn't new in 1932. It may have no basis in ancient Egyptian belief, but it's a bit of a theme in 19C literature. Gauthier's "The Mummy's Foot" from 1840 is the earliest example I can think of. (It's a pretty good story, BTW, and long out of copyright so freely available online.) |

Korvessa +1 I had the same reaction you did! By the way, that wasn't the 90's. "Mummy Daddy" was broadcast in 1985! I know, I know, time flies…. My second choice goes to Bubba Ho-Tep |
