"From 1645 to 1669 Venice and the Ottomans were engaged in the Cretan War. During the war both bolstered their naval forces by hiring armed merchantmen from the Netherlands and England. While much of fighting centred on Crete, fighting spread to the Adriatic where the Ottomans gaining some territory. Yet, Ottoman interests were also vulnerable to attack. This fictional encounter assumes that in addition to armed merchantmen the English have assembled a land expedition, financed by merchant companies and recruited from Civil War veterans.
