Ben Johnson, perennial cowboy actor, who played Trooper Travis Tyree, did his own trick riding. He was a real "cowboy" and rodeo star who was seen in many of the Duke's films. He is one of my favorite actors. He was a riding double for Henry Fonda in "Fort Apache" who was hired by John Ford for talking parts in the other two trilogy films. He ended up with an Academy Award (and BAFTA) for his performance in "The Last Picture Show."

Ben Johnson also won the PRCA Team Roping World Champion in 1953 and was inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1979. Quite a career as both an actor and professional rodeo cowboy. Always admired him.

A great movie, and made almost by accident. Wayne was pressuring Yates at Republic to green light "The Quiet Man" which all the majors had turned down--color and location shooting in Ireland would be too expensive: it would be a nice film, but they'd lose money. Yates said as much himself, but went on "but if you (John Ford) will shoot a nice cheap black and white western with the same cast first, to make up the money this one's going to cost, I'll go ahead with both movies."

Notice that just about every principal in Rio Grande shows up the next year in The Quiet Man? Not a coincidence. I'm told Yates looked a little stunned accepting the Academy Award. That sort of thing didn't happen at Republic.

My friend's son is the current PRCA Team Roping World Champion (heeler). The work that goes into that title is simply incredible.
