The Germans continue their assault in the fifth game of The Scottish Corridor campaign for Chain of Command. The panzer grenadiers are showing how capable they are of inflicting casualties on the British and the men's opinion has slumped accordingly. Can the British manage to stall the Germans, but avoid paying a heavy price? The full report is here: Scenario 5: Attack on Mouen

That combat between the British A/T teams and the Tiger is really gripping and "unputdownable". They certainly could have done with a Firefly turning up, as suggested, or even a towed 17pdr. I suspect the overwhelming artillery and air support would have helped the Allied side too, especially with the bad chaps throwing so many sixes.

It's an interesting situation, as the British are not going to benefit from any 'overwhelming artillery and air support' just yet. The campaign takes place over 12 hours, each game turn taking place at hourly intervals.

On this flank, by sheer accident, one Company of the 3rd Monmouths had become disorientated as it advanced southwards in the dark night of the 27th of June. Upon arriving in an unidentified village, the Company commander decided to rest his men in the deserted buildings and continue his march South in the morning. This placed them directly in the path of the 1st battalion of the Leibstandarte. This is where the campaign begins on this flank and we are seeing it from a company level at best, but fighting at a platoon level. Danger close issues aside, air and artillery assets are not on call to a platoon leader, or even a company commander (other than battalion mortars). Given the situation where the company isn't even sure where it is, calling in support would be difficult at best.

Fighting began almost immediately and the tanks of the 4th Kompanie of 22 Panzer Regiment went into action to support the attack. Outnumbered, the Monmouths nevertheless put up a fight. It was only in the afternoon that Mouen was fully secured by the Leibstandarte.

What we are getting here is the action from a platoon commander's perspective. Later games and those on the other flank have better support available. There are certainly Fireflies about, but not at Mouen.

Congratulations for your win, and as always, thanks for sharing this well written AAR and these superb photos.
I've noticed too how the Germans were dissuaded from following their plan on the left flank and shifted to the right one. And things started to unravel for them at that point : the losses of the MG42 section deprived them of some vital infantry support, leaving the Tiger exposed as it shifted to the right side. No infantry were able to protect it from your concentrated AP firepower. And as usual, an isolated tank is often a dead tank ;)
