Does anyone know the name (and ideally the arms) of the standard-bearer of Edward IV in any of his battles? And same question for Henry VI, on those occasions when he was present at a battle (1st StA, Northampton, etc)?

Quick search yielded

Reference to Standard Bearer for England
link

For Edward IV

Sir David Mathew for Edward IV – Towton was the battle where Edward acknowledged him Grand Standard Bearer for England
link

Ralph Vestynden is also listed as a standard bearer during Towton for Edward with the Black Bull Standard
link

Neville "may have" also had that role during the battle of Barnet

For Henry VI

Sir William Brandon who died at Bosworth. His brother Thomas was also listed as a standard bearer.

Note there were some internet references to a Sir Willima Burton also being a standard bear for Henry VI and dying at Towton

The Earl of Wiltshire was standard bearer to Henry VI at 1st St Albans.

MajorB19 Aug 2025 2:42 p.m. PST

Sir William Brandon who died at Bosworth.

I think that was Henry Tudor (later Henry VII) not Henry VI

You are right my error

Many thanks to DisasterWargamer for the quick replies. Two notes:

(1) The Wiki link shows "or, a lion sable" for the arms of Sir David Matthew. Isn't that also the arms of Flanders?

(2) It does seem that Sir William Burton is a strong possibility for Henry VI's standard-bearer at later battles than 1st SA (thanks to Major B for the Wiltshire tip – didn't Wiltshire flee from 1st SA somewhat ingloriously?). I can't find arms for Burton on Wiki yet.

Eumelus, I did a bit of a search and found this on link :

Sir William Burton was the standard bearer for King Henry VI in France from 1421 to 1429. He sadly died at the Battle of Towton in 1461.

As for a crest, link refers to "Burton of Falde Hall, co. Staffordshire, England – Sir William Burton (c. 1391-1461)" and gives the arms as azure a fess or, three hound (talbot?) heads erased or.

Graham Turner has painted Ralph Verstynden with the Black Bull standard – the picture is in his Ward of the Roses book and is accessible on his Studio 88 website. The picture shows Verstynden in armour rather than a surcoat but there's no trace of arms for that name in the Armorial Generale of Europe so he may not have had them.
