I've seen 3 episodes over about 5 weeks or so. I find the whole thing pretty uninspiring. They guy who plays Nemo has the most gravitas, but I don't think he can carry the whole show. I am glad that someone took a risk on VSF programming, but I think this is a missed opportunity. Of course, I may be in the completely wrong demographic for this show.

Never heard of it. What platform is it on?

Grattan54 Supporting Member of TMP14 Aug 2025 11:32 a.m. PST

Yes, did not care for it. I know the word is overused but very woke. All the good guys are non-western. All the bad guys are white males and eeevil. Plus, I just didn't think it was very good.

Sunday evening on AMC.

Agree with Grattan54. I am most offended, however, by the use of a 1890's style French battle ship titled "Dreadnought" built by the East India Company to chase the "Nautilus" also built by the EIC in the same year that the Sepoy Mutiny was raging in India! This is not to mention the
black sun helmets and red naval uniforms worn by the EIC troops. But I really haven't been paying attention to it.

Agree; I was hoping it would be a good series, but unfortunately it did not hold my interest after a couple of episodes. Opportunity missed.

I enjoyed the series.
I believe it is now cancelled,.

Horrible woke, what appears to be a nuclear reactor on the sub with torpedoes, sailing ships mixed with WWI battleships, and the god awful uniforms.

Some fun anyway.

I'll keep watching.

I also enjoyed the series and hope for a season 2. I agree the dreadnaught was way over the top and they should have stayed with the original story line of Nemo by Jules Verne (Twenty thousand Leagues under the Sea). As to being too woke in the story, I don't know that you could make Nemo white and still have a story line that made sense. Verne's Nemo is an Indian Prince and with his crew none of whom are white.

There doesn't seem to have been any creative activity since season 1 was completed in 2023, the prospect of a second season seems unlikely

I watched the first several episodes, but didn't find it interesting enough to continue watching. I was hoping for something closer to the the novel.

Mister Tibbles14 Aug 2025 5:16 p.m. PST

I made it 30 minutes and moved on. No joke. :-(

rxpjks114 Aug 2025 5:54 p.m. PST

Bad.

jfleisher14 Aug 2025 7:24 p.m. PST

I tried. Nope.

emckinney14 Aug 2025 10:17 p.m. PST

You do realize that the novel is completely "woke," don't you? Nemo is a South Asian socialist. His family was slaughtered by an (unnamed) imperialist nation that he hates.

I suspect that it's less woke than it should be, since it probably soft-pedals the socialism.

Schogun15 Aug 2025 5:51 a.m. PST

The series is silly especially the "monster of the week." And how can, what, 9-10 people operate that behemoth? And the Dreadnought has infinite coal stores?

The set design is amazing though.

Col Durnford Supporting Member of TMP15 Aug 2025 8:45 a.m. PST

Actually, Nemo (the character) is the least woke part of the show. I do agree the visuals are quite impressive.

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP15 Aug 2025 7:15 p.m. PST

Alas, I heard of it some time ago, but haven't had the opportunity to watch.

As I am rather woke myself, I would only be offended by wooden characters and contrived situations. That's not woke; that's just lazy.

Of course, most of the Brit complaints were about Clem Fandango, but that was lost on me, even after googling.

I DID think that looked like French tumblehome, but I am not that familiar with the specifics of period naval engineering. There's still hope for me?

Tried to watch it, made it thru 10 minutes, nope.
Just bad.

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP18 Aug 2025 11:31 a.m. PST

Having non-white protagonists doesn't make something woke. Woke is a bit more complex than that and involves copious amounts of overt moralizing. That said, I did not watch this as I cut the cord ages ago and don't have access to AMC.

And I loved Clem Fandango! He's hilarious.

Nemo was first designed as a white, catholic, Polish emigree (ex-upriser, imprisoned in Siberia, who fled from Siberia and found treasure along the way) who was hunting Russian ships. Seriously.
Based on real person of Stefan Drzewiecki

But since Verne got a lot of money from Russian readers, publisher forced Verne to change Nemo's nationality and enemy.
Even if I am Pole, I think it was a rational and suitable change.

Col Durnford Supporting Member of TMP22 Aug 2025 11:16 a.m. PST

I have never heard of the Russian connection. That sort of stuff still goes on. The terrible remake of Red Dawn originally had Chinese as the lead invaders.
