It was actually a three-way arms race between Argentina, Chile, and Brazil. It culminated in all three nations acquiring two Dreadnoughts each (Rivadavia and Moreno for Argentina, Minas Geraes and Sao Paulo for Brazil, and Almirante Latorre and Almirante Cochrane for Chile). Brazil started a third battleship before the money ran out. That third Brazilian battleship was called the Rio de Janeiro, then the Turkish Sultan Osman I, and finally HMS Agincourt. |
