Probably started out red, and then faded. Probably not from washing, but the general stink of the cowboy.

So, here's a dumb question.
When did red underwear become available in the Old West?
Could they go back as far as the FIW or AWI?

The "Union Suit" was first made in Utica, NY in 1868. Oddly enough, it was initially marketed to women as an alternative, liberating garment from the constrictive corsets and such commonly worn in that era.

Interesting on the start date. I have red letters from Confederate soldiers to their home asking for shoes and under garments. Less often socks. UN-dyed cotton or wool rather than red/pink.

So I have to wonder what they were writing for?
