My latest Wargamer's reading list focuses upon the various Royalist field armies, and explains why the raw historical material is rather thin on the ground. link

I had found enough pike to do 8 more P&S units, and I was looking through your blog last night for colors. I was trying to match up mostly royalist, and decided on a couple trained band units, basically what I already had flags for. Your blog is very helpful in at least giving direction if colors are unsure. |

"A really good starting point is the 'Indignant Officers' lists". That typo made me chuckle. It's "indigent" – though they may well have been pretty furious. |

Thanks for your kind words Disaster Wargamer Back to Indigent/Indignant… I can only see it as Indignant now, I'm going to have to try very hard for it to become Indigent again

Good article Mike. One thing to consider as well is that if the Royalists had central records they were almost certainly all burnt prior to the surrender of Oxford in 1646. The writing was on the wall that anyone linked too closely to the Royalist army might have their estates sequestrated by Parliament. |

As always, a great review of the sources available. The only one I have is the Hopton book. Just ordered a new biography of Prince Rupert. Any thoughts about that? |

Hi, S'nasty. Not got Mark's new Rupert book yet. Mark is fastidious in his research, and tries very hard to be neutral in his findings. There's far too many hagiographies out there – including from some 'big names' in historical biographies. If his Charles book is anything to go by, it should be good. Hi Tim, yes agreed I'm sure some central Oxford records were destroyed before they fell into Parliamentarian hands. |
