Does anyone know which figure is the Khalifa? Is there a "uniform" guide or images to paint them? link |

I would agree with Dave. But have you thought of emailing the Perrys and asking them? Jim |

Hi. I did email them but it is hit and miss. Sometimes they respond and other times I'm ghosted. Considering I spent much dineros $$$ buying Perry Miniatures recently, they should respond. I've been a good customer. |

Have that set and believe the one on the left is the Khalifa. |

Not so sure, isn't he usually depicted with a beard and wearing a turban? |

Rudolph Slatin was the Khalifa's prisoner for years. Here is his description of the Khalifa from his book Fire and Sword in the Sudan: Abdullahi's dress consists of a jibba made of superfine white cotton cloth with a coloured border, loose cotton drawers, and on his head a beautifully made Mecca silk skull-cap, around which a small white turban is wound. Around his body a narrow strip of cotton, about five yards long, called wassan, is worn, and a light shawl of the same material is thrown across his shoulders. He formerly wore sandals; but latterly he has taken to wearing soft leather stockings of a light brown colour, and yellow shoes. When walking, he carries a sword in his left hand, and in his right a beautifully worked Hadendoa spear, which he uses as a walking-stick. The book is on the internet here: link There are several drawings of the Khalifa in the book, and they show him in white with a dark something around his neck. He doesn't seem to be wearing the patches symbolizing poverty associated with the early dervish movement. Grelber |
