I'd like to build a 28mm unit of mounted British infantry to represent the 63rd Regiment of Foot during the Southern Campaign in South Carolina, circa 1780.

Any suggestions as to 28mm mounted figures that might be suitable for conversions? Probably wore roundabouts, slouch hats, with slung muskets and bayonets -- no swords.

They rode with Tarleton's Legion cavalry at the Battle of Blackstock's Plantation, but dismounted prior to going into action.

Perry Miniatures plastic ACW cavalry have been recommended as a possibility, but I am hoping to find something a little closer to 1780-era dress.

To make it even more obscure, there was a Highland regiment in the South with a mounted company.

That's a tough one. I don't recall anyone making mounted infantry. But Front Rank (Gripping Beast) has dismounted dragoons. Maybe do a head swap.

You are in 3d printed territory here. I would recommend Battlecat AWI line as they have mounted and dismounted dragoons which you can easily swap heads to infantry hats.

They also have a mounted ranger sculpt.

There is a printer on Etsy who prints these as well.

You know, an ACW plastic kit might not be a hopeless starting point. Figure the coat tails would have been long ago cut off to patch uniforms and scrounge heads and muskets from an AWI kit. You'd want a figure in trousers and shoes rather than boots, of course. Real hard core would use AWI waist up and ACW waist down.

Well, I am definitely NOT that hard core. 😄

Thank you for all the suggestions. Very helpful. Much to consider.

There was a mounted militia unit that used clubs as well..
