There is a specific uniform for hungarian cavalry generals: brown busbie, white dolman and red. Foundry has a special miniature (28mm) for that.

At the moment i am painting austrian generals for my 1809 austrian army. Mostly divisional generals, but also specific corps/army generals (bigger bases).

Is there a corps General in 1809, who could have used that uniform?

I have found this gentleman to be very useful.

At the start of hostilities in 1809 the following held the rank of General der Kavallerie:
Archduke John
Henrich Graf Bellegarde
Johann Furst Liechtenstein

As the above probably wore the normal Austrian Senior Staff uniforms, you might want to use your figure as:

Generalmajor Ignaz Pankraz Galeaz Freiherr von Splenyi de Miháldy who commanded a Hussar Brigade with the Frimont Hussar Regiment & Archduke Joseph Hussar Regiment. This Brigade formed part of VIII Armeekorps part of the Armee von Innerosterreich under Archduke John. You have to look at the guys bio. If they have an administrative rank in Hungary, yes. My guess is most if not all the commanders of Inssurectio will be dressed like that too.

Erzherzog Johann27 Jul 2025 1:25 a.m. PST

I would think GM Timoteus Kerekes, who commanded the Neutreur and the (mysterious) Primatial hussar regiments at Aspern-Essling and Wagram could well have been dressed in that uniform.

Cheers,
John

Slightly off the discussion but regarding the Insurrection hussars I have read that they were basically a militia unit.

I also understand that they ‘ran off ‘ at Aspern and were not much use at Wagram.

Is this correct, as it will save me a lot of time not having to create them?

Thank you in advance to the members.

Best wishes,

Chris

Chris,
There was a brigade of 2 regiments at Aspern-Essling. They were held in reserve and did no fighting.

Gill volume 2 page 134 has a good description of the Insurrection troops.
"The cavalry lacked training, harness, uniforms, sabres, pistols, and experienced officers." They were as you surmised the equivalent of militia.

Hi Ian.

Thank you for that.

I am not sure how I missed that as I have just looked it up in Mr Gill's fabulous book.

That saves me a lot of crafting and painting.

Best wishes,

Chris

I disagree Chris. How can you ignore such interesting units? The Neutreur were genuinely Insurrectio, but the Primatial were raised by the Church Primate. Both differed from the rest of the Insurrectio in that they had agreed (not democratically I expect) to fight away from home, hence their presence at Aspern-Essling and Wagram. They didn't exactly cover themselves with glory*, but would look great IMO. The lack of proper provision of uniforms would make them a more interesting project I think.

Cheers,
John

*There were a lot more of them at Raab and they didn't do very well there either.

Thanks John but I have enough on my plate creating the Austria army from scratch and am getting a bit fed up with caterpillars too.

Forty less to paint is welcome news!

Best wishes,

Chris
