i want to get something started with Legacy of Glory – a forgotten and maligned ruleset, but i just keep coming back to the desire to make use of it does anyone have experience here with it – i mainly want to know how you get it started ideally- the rules dont provide any scenarios or suggested army sizes to start with. I have Saalfeld 1806 in mind as a battle to look at, but not sure of the approach to it with these rules |

I habe only experience with reading the rules. But IMO Et sans Resultat! tries to do the same like LoG, but better. |

Saalfeld will be a bit small for LoG. LoG was intended as a rival to Empire at the time and is designed to offer the same sort of Command & Control game for multi-division & multi-corps actions. Saalfeld is a great little battle but its little … not a lot of commands on either side. IMHO |

ah okay – well i was looking for something little and well one doesnt have figures and whatnot to flesh out whole multi corps armies. Yes i am familiar with ESR and it does appear to be much more refined answer to LoG. I think though perhaps as an initial look at LoG maybe something with not a lot of commands is not too bad an idea and i want to do this solitaire ESR would be another option, but i dont think they have stats yet for 1806. The latest edition depends on waiting for the campaign guides to be published (i have gotten two of them so far) but then the scenarios that it comes with look to suggest one owns swimming pool size tables. perhaps i will look at also then Grand Battery and Napoleon – i have an attraction always to the rulesets that everyone seems to hate. |

If you're looking for an old school, highly detailed set of rules suitable to small actions, you might look at From Valmy to Waterloo. Figure scale/unit size similar to Empire. |

Oof. Grand Battery is…a hot mess. Saalfeld has, what, 20,000 troops total for both sides? With a battle that small, you'll want a game with each unit being a battalion. I'd look at Lasalle, 1805, or Piquet: Field of Battle. |

I'm very happy with Emperor of the Battlefield. Use a Corps (30 -40 odd units) per player. Great fun. There's a competition at Britcon in August. |

As said, it is done for big fights though the basic unit is a battalion, so the ground scale is, in 15mm around 1cm for 16m which needs a huge space for anything moderately big. It focuses on orders and command, Saalfeld might be small, but you can do basic Prussian Maneuver element to be brigades or similar which would be accurate. The French might have an easy day, but it might be the case with most rules with command. The delays from the command system might make it desperately slow but actually it is probably right though not so "gamey". When thing might get a bit confused, or you want to update it, look at Republique and Empire which is a set born from the itimate relation of Empire V and Legacy.:) |

thanks for the suggestions – my go to scale is for 3mm, where 3cm is 100m – i was trying to get a lock on the rough size of the saalfeld battlefied and i think around 4km x 4km would be right do you think? i enjoy a game as a slow simulation sometimes and Legacy of Glory could fit that bill I heard all the reports of Grand Battery as a hot mess and i know it is not a deep ruleset, but what exactly was wrong with it? |
GeorgBuchner | 20 Jul 2025 9:06 p.m. PST |
looking into Saalfeld more and even though its small i hit that problem whenever i get a desire to do something historical – the actual number of units needed is still enormous All of Lannes V corps – 16 regiments in Suchets division alone and so what is that in battalions – like 50-60? I can see the value then instead of playing a rules where the minimum unit is a regiment such as Vive L'Empereur That said, how much of Lannes V Corps was at the battle? All i have so far for the OOB is the Nafziger collection french army as a of October 1806. Surely not the whole Corps was committed onto the battlefied was it? |

GeorgBuchner: I commend you for trying LOG. I agree with others that Et Sans Resultat! is the successor to LOG and would use those rules. I just played ESR at Historicon last week and had a great time. That being said I always felt LOG was the first set of Napoleonic rules that 'got it right'. If you do want to use LOG do you have any of the playtest extras that where produced? There is a Corrigenda labeled version 1.2 Also have a playtest version 1.5 which includes a step by step tutorial which the original author had sent to me many years ago. I might be able to scan the documents and send them if you wanted. I also have some 3mm figures and loved the look & easy of painting. I just have thousands of H&R 6mm painted and didn't want to redo them. Please keep us up to date with how this project goes for you. Sincerely, Dale |
