I dug these old veterans out of the Mountain of Shame and gave them a quick Old School paint job. I rather like them that way. The figures are nothing fancy and neither is the brushwork but they match with my other RAFM minis (which have a thirty year old paint-job). If you wish to see more click here: link OK I give up on cross-posting, it just keeps timing out….

One of the challenges is to paint to match our old friends. Some years ago, I started logging the paints used on my figure projects. At the time, I said to myself "so I can do the same color scheme 20 years from now". Well, here I am 20 years later. The write ups are still here, but many of the paint lines are no longer with us. |

That old-school paint job looks pretty good to me. I said to myself "so I can do the same color scheme 20 years from now". Well, here I am 20 years later. The write ups are still here, but many of the paint lines are no longer with us. When I was young, I lived with an artist. She thought that it was amusing that I bought specific colors of paint so that I could match the paint when I increased the size of a unit in the future. The colors you've put on your miniatures will change subtly over time, even if you use spray-fix, she counseled (or words to that effect). She also noted (more or less): the paint brands and colors that you are buying now may not exist in the future, and even if they are still around, the same color name may then be a slightly different color than what it is today. She of course knew how to get exactly the color she wanted by mixing paints (and she wasn't even a painter, but rather a sculptor). I've been adjusting paint colors for 40-ish years since then. I find that it's actually rare to add miniatures to a unit, but when I have done so, I've gotten pretty good color matches. |

I go out of my way to paint slight color variations within a unit. Especially British red. I don't like my dudes looking like they just got out of basic training. I am working on some Northstar AWI British line right now and I have used opaque paint and Agrax and/or Nuln oil wash, gray undercoat with red wash, white undercoat with same red wash. Next I will probably mix a little yellow in the opaque red to lighten it up and wash it… |
