Battle of Antietam ( Sharpsburg ) 17th September 1862

Timeline 12.00 Noon.

US Horse artillery is in action at the Orndorff Bridge with infantry support arriving in the form of US regular troops from the Second Division , Brigadier General George Sykes commanding, of the Union Fifth Corps.

The Union Sixth Corps, Major General William B Franklin commanding, freshly arrived from Keedysville, has begun to deploy off the Smoketown Road.

Union forces under Brigadier General William French are advancing through the Piper orchard under a galling blizzard of artillery fire.

Union troops under are attempting another crossing of the Rohrbach bridge under a hail of musketry from the Confederate defenders.
