I live in London near a sheltered water way that sees a great many birds migrate through with the seasons. I know little about birds, but today I spotted one of the winter visitors called a black headed gull in July, which I've not seen before. I looked it up and it seems that only the ones who couldn't find a mate stick around London all year. It was all such a nice story until chat gpt spit out that little fact. Poor little guy!

Well, at least he gets to enjoy the museums.

And go out at night without being told what time he has to be home.

Can't even remember the name of the place. Big bird sanctuary north(?) of London, where they've actually posted arrival and departure times for each species?

Anyway, look at it the other way. Maybe your black-headed gull refuses to migrate. and that tends to be a deal-breaker with the females. Wikipedia says "Most of the population is migratory and winters further south, but many also remain in the milder areas of northwestern Europe."

I can see refusing to migrate. Does not Johnson tell us that "he who is tired of London is tired of life?"

Black headed gulls are pretty common in the UK all year around, but they only have a black head in the summer. You've probably seen them before without knowing what they were.

The ones that stay may be the confirmed bachelors of the species.
