I will be running a game at Historicon this year titled "Who Killed Julius Caesar?" and it is based on the board game Clue (or Cluedo in the UK). The game is on Friday night at 7PM, Event #900 and runs for one hour.

Clue features six suspects and six possible murder weapons and 8-9 rooms in the mansion where the crime takes place.

I substituted player tokens with 60mm miniature war game figures. Instead of different rooms in a mansion, I have a Roman city with nine different buildings. So the players will travel from building to building searching for clues rather than going from room to room .

I created Clue cards for six Roman characters, taking a picture of each figure and then gluing it onto a playing card fashioned from cardboard. I did the same thing for the six weapons and the nine buildings. I used Latin names for the characters, the Latin equivalent word for the weapons and the buildings.

From there, the game pretty much follows the rules of the board game, except now everything is three dimensional. This really enhances the game and is good looking as well. We have played the game a number of times and it always creates a cracker of a game in under one hour.

Here are some pictures of the cards that I made for the game:

And here is the game board recreated as a 3D wargame table top of buildings:

There are six slots available for this game and I hope that you will consider signing up for my game. I would be honored to have your participation in my game.

I hope to see you there.

Now let's go out and have some fun!

Sister St Lawrence would be so proud of me for how I'm still finding my Latin useful.

Having been influenced by these things, Caesar not only picked up his impediments, but also made a march to the camp of the Belgae.

I wondered where those Roman civilian figures were going to show up! Reminds me of my high school history teacher reading us "Who killed Big Julie?" Which--thank you, Youtube!--bore a strong resemblance to "Rinse the Blood off my Toga."

"All right, Brutus, you're going up the Tiber for a long time."

Well, given all the blood, I deduce that we can rule out rope as the murder weapon.

English translation sung to the tune of "Far above Catuga's waters…"

Well my dear, it looks like Mr OFM is an educated man. Now I know I don't like him.

It does sound like A great little game.

OFM, I reconginzed the tune, but not the lyrics. Our version was

(It's more inclusive now than it was when they threw me out, of course. Most things are.)

Is movement still variable, by dice roll?

Stryderg01 Jul 2025 6:09 p.m. PST

That is an awesome adaptation!

Hmmm… not as tricky as the original, having ony 6 rooms— which probably works better for a light convention game.

But we all know that no matter what, Brutus was an accomplice!

Et tu, Alte?

Gather about me men who are sleek and fat.
Jim has a lean and hungry look. He thinks too much. Such men are dangerous.

Gentlemen, I suggest you look up Suetonius' narration of Caesar's men singing bawdy songs in his Triumph.
Latin can be quite bawdy.

Parzival: actually there are nine buildings rather than six in my game.

Toaster01 Jul 2025 11:48 p.m. PST

Next you need to run a Kill Caesar game using the same figures and scenery but with the Kill Dr Lucky boardgame rules. Rewriting the failure cards for Roman flavor should be particularly fun.

Actually the Kill Caesar game should of course be run first.

Robert
