Russia's artillery – once the backbone of its invasion strategy – is being dismantled piece by piece. Ukraine's use of drones, advanced targeting systems, and real-time reconnaissance has flipped the battlefield. Nearly 30,000 artillery systems have been destroyed, forcing Russia to rethink its tactics.

According to the source "The Military Balance 2025", at the beginning of 2025, the Russian army had 5,157 artillery systems in service (this number does not include about 1,300 anti-tank 100-mm MT-12 guns).

Self-propelled guns: more than 64 units of 120-mm (2S23 Nona-SVK, 2S34 and "Floks" 2S40), 400 units of 122-mm 2S1 "Gvozdika", 600 units of 152-mm 2S3 "Akatsiya", 100 units of 152-mm 2S5 "Giatsint-S", 150 units of 152-mm 2S19 and 2S19M1 "Msta-S" and 300 2S19SM2 "Msta-SM", 8 units of 152-mm 2S35 "Koalitsiya-SV" and 20 2S43 "Malva" of the same caliber. 203-mm self-propelled guns are represented by 50 units of 2S7M "Malka" and 75 units of 2S7 "Pion". Plus 240-mm self-propelled mortars 2S4 "Tulip" – 39 pieces. But all the figures voiced refer to the guns currently in use, and there are also reserves: 1000 pcs. 122-mm 2S1 "Gvozdika", more than 500 pcs. 152-mm 2S3 "Akatsiya", 300 pcs. 2S5 152-mm "Giatsint-S", 50 pcs. 152-mm 2S19 "Msta-S" and more than 50 pcs. 203-mm 2S7 "Pion". Plus 160 pcs. 240-mm mortar 2S4 "Tulip". Towed guns: 25 pcs. x 120-mm 2B16 "Nona-K", 200 pcs. x 122 mm D-30 and 50 pcs. M-30 of the same caliber, 50 pcs. x 130 mm M-46, 150 pcs. x 152 mm 2A36 "Giatsint-B", 150 pcs. x 152 mm 2A65B "Msta-B", more than 20 pcs. 152 mm D-1 and 50 pcs. D-20 of the same caliber. According to their calculations, this is all the reserve guns in combat readiness. There are also 4,050 non-self-propelled guns in reserve that require de-preservation and restoration repair. Among the 122 mm guns, this includes "more than 1,000" D-30, "more than 1,000" M-30. Let's add to this 300 units of 130 mm M-46, 350 pcs. x 152 mm 2A36 "Giatsint-B", 100 pcs. x 152 mm 2A65B "Msta-B", 500 pcs. x 152 mm D-1 and 700 pcs. D-20 of the same caliber. The British also found 100 very ancient ML-20 in storage… Although. And these museum exhibits can come in handy if necessary)))

MLRS. There are 1131 units. 36 pcs. TOS-1, "several" TOS-2 and "several TOS-3". 650 units of 122 mm BM-21 "Grad", 200 pcs. x 122 mm 9K51M Tornado-G, 175 units of 220 mm 9P140/9K512 Uragan-1M, 50 units of 300 mm 9A52 Smerch and 20 units of 9K515 Tornado-S of the same caliber. This is used in the Russian army now. Reserve: 1,350 MLRS. 100 BM-13 (I wonder where they found them in our warehouses? But it is possible…). The rest sounds more plausible. 500 units of 122 mm BM-21 Grad, 200 units of 122 mm 9P138 Grad-1 and 550 units of 220 mm 9P140 Uragan.

Artillery systems supplied by the North Koreans are not taken into account…

Russia revised its tactics for a completely different reason. For the same reason that in the First World War the most effective attacks were made by small groups of stormtroopers. And tanks – but in this war they are too vulnerable.
