"At some point in your miniature painting journey, you may wonder if you've reached a point where you're considered "good". Many years ago, I wondered this myself, whether my skills with a brush and paint had reached a level that could be admired and respected by others in the miniature painting community. When I was painting other people's stuff (all in scales 2-10mm) the most important aspects of my service were reliability & communication. Nice paint jobs are great but you want them when promised and you want to be kept informed. High quality stuff may be important at larger scales and drive prices up but, for wargaming quality, reliability is what drives sales.
Too few think about the logistics of providing a painting service, which is why so many fail to deliver.

When I briefly stepped into this years ago my biggest take away was I turned my very enjoyable hobby into a side hustle and it became a monkey on my back.

I did not look forward to painting every evening and had to force myself to do it. That really sucked.

I no longer paint for $. USD

I paint what I want and then sell what I no longer use. I have taken on commisions, but do not actively seek out work. I sell only at conventions. Since I paint almost every day for relaxation, I always have something to sell. This keeps the pile down to a unreasonable level :)

turned my very enjoyable hobby into a side hustle and it became a monkey on my back.

That's exactly why I rarely do commissions !
