I've just acquired figures for my Mycenaean Royal Guard -24 armoured infantry, armed with spear or sword.

The pack (Newline) came with a horn player and figures I can paint as commander & standard bearer for a command stand.
However, no standard was supplied.

Does anyone have ideas how I can scratch build something that can look authentic & use material that's easily made or easily procurable?

The only thing I know of that might be a Mycenaean standard is the frying-pan in this vase painting:

(and link thinks it may be a parasol).

Should be easy enough to mock up.

A simple pole (copper/steel wire) with a cross piece superglued on covered with a fragment of masking tape making a banner shape standard. Paint as appropriate.

I think Jim Duncan is on the right track. A banner of some sort on the end of a pole.Streamers would provide an interesting alternative to a flag.

I have seen people stick all sorts of skulls, animal figures, balls, disks, and what not on poles as standards. Most I think are more fantasy than reality.
