Nuts! was designed for 25mm platoon level action. Which I have enjoyed immensely.
Big Battles is for 15mm battalion level.
I was looking for an alternative to another game system (which in the end just didn't suit me) – specifically on ethat was quick and easy to learn – and suitable for solo.

Below is my first game of Nuts! Big Battles.

But first a teaser photo:

Another rules you could try is Company Commander from Nordic Weasel Games as it can be played solo

Very interesting, thanks for sharing!

That's a pretty big fight, 4 companies vs 2 companies, a lot to keep track of, you certainly jumped straight into the deep end! ;)

The results were certainly plausible, and you mentioned the rules worked, but I'm curious as to how they felt. For what it's worth (and please forgive me if I'm out of line, I certainly am not seeking to cause offense), you seem to be a gamer that's big on the following the exploits of the characters (certainly the feeling I got from the platoon-level Finnish and Rockstar games), but this one seemed rather impersonal. Certainly that could be down to playing a new set of rules, but I'm curious what kind of feel you're shooter for and if you think you can get there with Big Battles.

Jack

Hi Jack
(Note to self, don't say that in an airport).
You are quite correct in that I rather enjoyed the roll-playing character aspect of the main (platoon level) game. This was especially true in the campaign game where your "Star" and to a lesser extent his squad mates, can grow during the camaign.
This aspect is notably absent in Big Battles. And it makes sense – otherwide there is just too much to keep track of. But it was fun to deal with bigger formations too.
Comes down to my mood I supppose. If in the mood to roll play and have limited numbers of troops – basic game. If I am in the mood to push bigger formations around – Big Battles.
I probably won't bother with a campaign for Big Battles, but I think I will run a few more scenarios. I have two in mind:
US Airborne v Germans in Normandy
Massive German v Soviet tank battle in mid-war

Although I probably wouldn't have ever bothered with it if I didn't have the miniatures already

Gotcha man, that all makes sense, I hope I didn't come off as a Bleeped text, was just curious.

I like playing higher-echelonned fights as well, but I still try to push the character aspect, so I have to simply push up the element scale so I don't have so much to track (that is, instead of 1 base = 1 squad and have 27 rifle stands in a battalion, I play one base = 1 platoon or even 1 company), but it all comes down to the willing suspension of disbelief ;)

V/R,
Jack

No worries mate
The thought of you coming off poorly never occured to me.

In this set of rules each base is a squad, but they don't act independantly. 3 squads (4 for early Soviets) makes a platoon and that is the lowest manuever element.
So the photo above is a Finnish platoon of 3 stands v. a Soviet platoon of 4 stands.

Cool man, thanks, just wanted to make sure.

And I'm with you on OOB, I've actually got Big Battles as well, also FNG, two different versions of Nuts!, Hell Hath no Fury, and a few of the campaign books. I'm a fan, just haven't played as much as I'd like, but you're definitely pushing me that way!

V/R,
Jack
