You were asked – TMP link

For miniature wargaming, which of the less popular historical periods is best for the tabletop?

And in the final round of voting:

27% said "Seven Years War"
18% said "WWI in the Middle East"
17% said "Korean War"

Not surprising, as the SYW, or at least the Prussian's battles, are about the closest real armies ever came to lining up like two wargame armies across the table / battlefield.

True that. Not an accident that Peter Young settled on tricorne armies.

I agree with the sentiment of the poll, but I've gt to differ from Billy. I don't think many wargames have the flexibility of the SYW, they're more WSS style.

I have been enjoying the Winter War last year or so.
I know WWII is very popular – but this part of it not so much

With the exception of the French and Indian War I think a lot of the more global aspects of the Sevens Years War are ignored in particular – From India to the Philippines

SYW is "not popular"?
Sez who?
That's like saying that Mary Ann is not as popular as Ginger.
Or that Bailey isn't as popular as Jennifer.

Well, I'm gaming Spanish in Mexico vs Comanche. 1758. That's SYW.

Didn't we already do this, OFM? Multiple times? I'd agree that any cut-off is arbitrary, butany way I look at it we're past the point of being even in the top ten of miniatures gaming. The Great Wargamng Survey pegged "18th Century" at 13th last time they asked, and we had three games at Cold Wars this year. If you stretch "popular" past the top ten, where do you draw the line?

Yeah, we talked about this, in the early rounds of this Poll.
I reject any insinuation that the SYW is unpopular. One of our stalwart games is 15mm Age of Reason. There is even a campaign in the works.
Hell, we have even had cakes made with der Alte Fritz's face on them!
And I regularly put on FIW games, and I've said, I'm gearing up for Comanche vs Spanish in 1758.

To me, other people's opinions and preferences are completely irrelevant.

spontoon21 Jun 2025 12:00 p.m. PST

I agree. SYW is unpopular. WAS is where it's at!! More nations participating, PLUS the ever popular Jacobite effort!
Probably the reason 18th. century is less popular than say Napoleonics, ACW, or WWII is that it is not taught in schools. THEN there is next to no media fingerprint for 18th. Century, bar Outlander.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP21 Jun 2025 3:58 p.m. PST

Hmm. My take is that basically everything between roughly 1600 and 1939 is doomed in the present environment. Hacking away on horseback wearing armor, driving tanks, and shooting at people from cover all make sense to Generation GW and current movie-goers. Standing in ranks wearing bright colors is counter-intuitive and looks stupid to them. (I've gotten it even from bright, educated Boomers.)

We'll survive, but look for ECW, Lace Wars, Napoleonics and ACW to have fewer and older players until a major cultural shift or a major cultural event.

By default, the winner of the poll was going to have to be pretty darn popular to garner more votes than the others.

"Less popular than what" was the undefined premise of the question.

It's like "most underrated".
Just what does that mean, anyway?
Some people could categorize Tom Brady by that. Of course, they're haters, and not to be reasoned with. 🤷

DJCoaltrain27 Jun 2025 4:47 p.m. PST

In Seattle tom brady is a dishonorable cheater.
