It took amazing courage to fight on when his country had surrendered. It was only a minority of those in England who heeded his call and can we blame them? The situation must have seemed hopeless. Who would then have imagined Free French Armies in Southern France one day, fighting in the hills of Italy and liberating Paris and Strasbourg? Well, he did.

The tragedies of Oran/Mers El Kebir, Dakar, Syria and Lebanon and the early opposition to operation Torch could (indeed should) have been avoided.

Well done for reminding us that 18th June was not just about a field In Belgium

#deadhead, yes! Who can say today what he would have done at that time?
He is a great man… he did it!

I saw his statue in Paris a few weeks ago.

Whilst not the most popular person in the English-speaking world, post-war, in retrospect he was correct in many ways.

Indeed, the strong France of today – a France the free world needs – is a result of his policies & opinions.

#ochoin, yes a great and tall man! ;-)
Nobody equal him in France since so many years… such a great man missing us! :-(

I admire his founding the Free French. On the whole a positive if divisive leader.
