There were some very bad incidents. The French clamped down on them pretty hard, executed several, sent others to labour camps. The French command then increased the numbers of NCOs and sous-officers too improve military discipline.

They French also imported Berber woman and families to add a level of support and family stabilization to the Goumiers military life.

After these changes were made, the reports of incidents seem to have diminished.
