I just acquired a semi-large collection of LotR figures. Instead of them just sitting around in a box, can anyone recommend a fairly simple but fun ruleset?

I keep hearing about Saga: Age of Magic.

What about Oathmark?

I already have this old rulebook called Chainmail by Gary Gygax. Would this be better?

Chainmail – great for an old school game.

Oathmark – loads of fun.

The official GW rules are fine for skirmish and quite good. Also, Dragon Rampant.

The GW LOTR rules do give a good game and there have been so many issues that a cheap second hand copy should be possible.

Dragon rampant, or Hordes of the things would work.

Thier is some LOtr saga battle board out on the web also

Midgard would be a good set as well.

I use Kings of War with some fan written lists and they work well.

The original Blue Book LoTR from GW is a fantastic set of rules that are easy to pick up $$ wise and simple to learn and play.

I'd also throw out Ravenfeast by Little Wars TV. It's a simple game set too that's fairly cheap (the PDF is free at their site) and it's easy to learn. Best yet is that you can used their open architecture system to generate your own stats for the miniatures you have, and there's a fantasy rules PDF out there that can get magic into the game.

You really can't lose with either one.

Knowing basing, and a rough number for "semi-large" would be helpful, but I'd second the recomendation of Dragon Rampant. Flexible, fast-playing and works well solo. DR--and, I think, most of the recommendations so far--work best with individually mounted figures. Hordes of the Things--again, flexible and fast-playing--works best with constant frontage bases.

Yeah – for HOTT would probably need some mouvement trays/bases the almost certainly individual round based figures

Dragon Rampant by Osprey books. It uses 12 and 6 figure units and it is very quick combat with lots of figures.
