"The definition of a British War Film is one that is largely British in character.

They may have been directed by non-British directors, or have non-British actors in the cast, and may even have been made in Hollywood or elsewhere, but they retain that element of Britishness that we all understand…"

Not a bad list

Not bad, Armand. Breaker Morant is more an anti-British film, showing how the evil/incompetent/"up 'emselves" British wasted Australia's soldiers and blamed them for any mistakes the "British Generals" were always making. It was favourite theme in Aussie war films of the 70's, 80's and 90's, and still is with some authors.

He's dead right about Kajaki and Dog Soldiers, though. If you haven't seen them then go out and find them, mate.

"yoghurt-weaving wheatgrass smoothy types" -- now THERE'S a turn of phrase! I'd hope I can remember it!

Let's see -- lists are basically only made to argue about. So, off the top of my head, I'll say, where are:

Tunes of Glory
Tobruk
The Gift Horse
Zulu Dawn
Flame Over India
The Drum

I'm sure there's more. Plus quibbling.

Not bad, Ice cold in Alex should be number one and went the day well just behind it. No a matter of life and death?

I agree with them about Hannibal Brooks – not many would have it in the list and I am one of them!

How about:
Where Eagles Dare
Battle of Britain
Dambusters
Dunkirk (John Mills one)
The Cruel Sea
633 Squadron

Glad to see The Guns at Batasi get mentioned.

I would add Morning Departure aka Operation Disaster (1946). Royal Navy submarine on a post-WW2 mission hits a mine and sinks, leading to a rescue attempt.

Then one of my favorite guilty pleasures, Dark of the Sun (1968).

BattlerBritain, these 3 are already on the list: Where Eagles Dare, Battle of Britain, Dambusters

Dave Jackson09 Jun 2025 7:02 a.m. PST

Oh, and The Cruel Sea

BattlerBritain09 Jun 2025 1:14 p.m. PST

Yeah, so 😊 🤷🏻‍♂️

My list of my faves 😍

jawdroppingly subversive. Cavalcanti establishes, with loving care and the occasional wry wink, the ultimate bucolic English scene, then takes an almost sadistic delight in tearing it to bloody shreds in an orgy of shockingly blunt, matter-of-fact violence
