All,
So, if you've been following my blog for any amount of time you know I've got a penchant for doing my own, odd thing, stuff that probably doesn't make any sense to anyone else. This is another of those situations ;) I found myself with some leftover early war Germans, Afrika Korps, and Fallschirmjager models from Warlord Games. Not wanting to let anything go to waste, and wanting to diversify my collection even more, I decided that having Afrika Korps and Fallschirmjager for Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy, wasn't enough, I was going to build some Hermann Goering Division troops just for this as well. They've always been interesting to me ever since 1) I read "Drop Zone Sicily" as a child, and 2) saw Germans in camo in the Kasserine Pass sequence of the movie "The Big Red One," also as a child.
I like doing Hermann Goering division troops because I get to do some cool camo and some mix-and match uniforms; not sure if it's real or not, but people on the internet are claiming they wore SS-type oak leaf camo and that's good enough for me! ;) I did it in 15mm, too… Then I really went out on a limb, found some guys on the internet that said some HG Division troops even wore the FJ helmet, so I couldn't help but mix a few of those into this force as well. I'm sure it's all apocryphal, but it will be okay.
A pair with MP-40s charging ahead, Schmeissers blazing ;)
A pair of machine gunners moving up.
A pair of riflemen, one sporting one of those FJ helmets I was talking about.
A couple guys I messed around with and 'kit-bashed' a bit. The one on right, I just took one of those ammo cases that come with the 50mm mortars and put it in his hand, but on the left, I took a panzerfaust and tried to turn it into a hafthohlladung, a hand-held (and hand-delivered) shape charge for knocking out tanks.
Doesn't really belong here but I didn't know where else to put it; the dreaded '88.'

Pretty cool, I'm happy how they turned out, and plan to use them in some skirmish games where troop quality varies (i.e., can show/use these guys as a cut above the 'normal' Afrika Korps in Tunisia).
V/R,
Jack
