Moi, j'ai un doute sur les cartes d'état-major en couleur ??? J'aurais plutôt vu du noir et blanc. |

Très bonne remarque. Je me suis trompé ! Mais la carte de la Belgique de Ferraris (1777) était en couleur, donc ce n'était pas totalement impossible. Presque, je l'admets! |

BTW this is all about how likely Napoleon's Staff were to have coloured maps of the Waterloo battlefield. They did exist but I have often read that decent maps of the locality were a particular problem for the Army of the North. |

The map used by Wellington at Waterloo still exists and is coloured: link |

Thanks for that. I have tonight looked through antique maps of Belgium courtesy of Google…..and most are watercolours. Maps in books would surely be B&W but the best known map (Ferraris) is freely available on-line and is coloured. Not sure about Napoleon's access to the internet or, indeed, about any detailed maps of the Mt St Jean battlefield. I have somewhere read the suggestion that he confused LHA farmhouse with MSJ farmhouse and had no idea that Hougoumont was there at all! My maps show the junction of the Nivelles and Charleroi road and the Forest of Soignes, but little else. |
