Warning: The following may spoil Predator.
I haven't looked this up, so it's just my own observations.
I was going to give it another watch before posting, but am jumping the gun. Have watched it many times.
In the film Predator Mac and Blain are friends.., but are they more than friends?
I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere.
My suspicion is that they are friends, but Mac wishes for more.
Evidence:
In the chopper Blain call the others a name suggesting his feelings towards such a group of people. Calls them slack jawed and that he is superior in the bedroom.
The wording could mean he is putting himself in the same group.
However, I'm thinking the other, as most would likely think, that he doesn't think much of the type of people he mentions.
It is also about chewing tobacco, which may relate?? Or not.
Next, Mac is quick to drink from Blaine's flask and to pick up his big gun. May be suggestive.
Mac's exchange with Dillon. Mac was the only black guy in the group, perhaps he views Dillon as competition for Blain. I can't believe I'm writing this and chuckled. But the exchange suggests Mac had a prior grievance with Dillon.
Remember, in masculinity, Dutch is probably first with Blain second. Mac and Dillon probably tie for third. Then Billy, Poncho, Hawkins. So they are neck and neck there, by my take.
He's always shaving, suggesting some frustration.
His reaction to Blaine's death is well over the top. Like he had unfinished business.
The predators attack on Blain, shooting him through the heart may be suggestive of the scary R word. Making Mac even more angry.
I'm sure "those eyes" means something. Not sure though.
When Mac tells Dutch "he was my friend," Dutch looks either disgusted or just shocked. Also, everyone would know they were friends, especially the audience, so there was a reason to say it, other than just being friends.
Mac having a moment to say goodbye, tucking in the flask. Over the top for a tough guy??
Mac's brutal attack on the pig. He's out for revenge.
Singing their song as he hunts the killer.
Getting shot in the head like that likely means something, likely chiasmus for "those eyes".
Stuff was mentioned in special features that everyone shooting crazily into the jungle was about the gun violence, so other "modern" type topics would not be surprising. It also shows the group trust Mac enough to follow his lead without question, making his later possible revaluation to Dutch all the more impactful.
A lot of 80s shows and movies touched on such subject matter (police academy being my favourite), so it, again, would be of no surprise.
I'll try to give it another look at some point.
I've loved the film since a kid. This concept has slowly dawned on me. I'm not calling it ideal, but there seems to be something going on.
Something else to study and figure out.
