All,

Sorry for spamming the boards, but I've got to get these posted so I can get to posting battle reports.

Figured I needed to show you all my British WWII vehicles, so here we are. I painted a fair few of these, most of them actually, but don't hold it against me ;) Right now they're broken down into vehicles for North Africa and vehicles for late war NWE, though I do have a few early war (Fall of France) and early Western Desert vehicles being painted up and on the way.

My stuff for North Africa.

And all my stuff for late war NWE, D-Day to Berlin.

And a troop of Shermans (with Firefly).

So, whaddaya think? Should be good enough to carry me in both those theaters, right? I wouldn't mind having a Churchill in desert camo for Tunisia and Italy, as well as some Shermans for the desert. Not sure what I should use for Brits in Sicily, probably Shermans, need to look that up. In any case, I'm pretty happy and should be set for all the scenarios I plan on doing in the near term.

V/R,
Jack

Nice work, Jack. I saw what you mean about the printed .50 cal. A lot of those were removed- with just the platoon HQ vehicle keeping them- and used for other purposes (some went onto some of the Recce platoon carriers, from memory), so you could remove them, if you want to.

Which rules and scale (vehicles:models) are you using?

Dal,

Thanks again for, I appreciate it!

I looked at hacking those giant.50-cals off, but it seemed like more trouble than it was worth.

With regards to rules, I've got two different concepts going:

1. I've got 15 and 10-year old boys, so I want to pit them against each other, probably using Bolt Action, modified a bit. I want to run linear mini-campaigns; not sure what to call them, but the "start in the middle and try to push the other guy off the edge of the world" type. I'm sure this isn't perfect, but as an example for Brit vs Germans in Normandy: (off the top of my head):

Gold/Juno/Sword – Villers Bocage – Bourgebus Ridge – Caen – Falaise

Start at Bourgebus Ridge and the winner of that game pushes the opposition back a location. So, a pretty basic framework to get a series of between three and maybe seven or eight games in.

2. Then there's my continued solo gaming. Not sure I'll have time for both, and the boys have priority, but I still love playing out campaigns following a cast of characters. For this I'm primarily thinking about platoon-level games using NUTS!, which Korvessa has recently got me re-intrigued by (bought them years ago but it didn't take), and if that doesn't work I'm thinking about some home-grown rules designed to work hand-in-glove with Joe Legan's "Platoon Forward" solo gaming supplement. And then there's always a need to get back to my Kampfgruppe Klink saga, getting ready to head into Operation Barbarossa (having already done Poland, France, and Greece).

Jack

Nice work – all the way down to the formmation markings!

JMcCarroll04 Jun 2025 3:14 p.m. PST

They would like great in Italy too!

Thanks, guys!

I can't promise anything on the formation markings, I was just googling pics and moving quickly ;)

Yes, some of these will certainly be seeing action in Italy.

The mini campaign idea seems alright, mate. Bolt Action should be easy for them to handle, too. My sons left wargaming behind in their early 20's (one to chase skirts and uni, and the other to restoring and/or souping-up cars). On the plus side I got to keep all the 6mm and 15mm stuff I'd bought them.

A simple guide to UK and Commonwealth tac signs and markings is GB's excellent UK Tank Markings site. The AFV markings are at link but, for simplicity:

HQ vehicles- a diamond (because they're precious)

A Squadron (SQN)- Triangle

B SQN- Square

C SQN- Circle

D SQN- Solid, not outline, upright bar.

Nice German squishy things, too. :-)

Gotcha man, trying to ensnare the boys before it's too late ;)

Thanks for all the info on the markings, but $&@#%, I can't believe I marked my Sherman's as HQ…

Leave 'em as HQ vehicles, mate. They got stuck in too. It was the Brigade and higher HQ that led from the rear. :-)

Yeah, I'm not changing them now.

Getting ready to post the next two forces.
