Over the last 7 days the voting has been going on for the Preliminary Round of Wargaming Pet Hates and its time to announce the qualifiers who go through to the 1st Round Proper.
These 16 "teams" will be drawn into 8 knock out ties, the draw will occur during the recording of the Brews in the Binyard Summer Special Podcast on 6th June, my intention is to set the match ups off on the 9th June, more details to follow The winners of the 8 first round match ups will progress through to Round 2 where they meet the seeds, 8 pet hates chosen for no other reason that they are the 8 things I hate the most. 1. Competition Games 2. Round Dice 3. Points Battles 4. Painting Portaloo 5. Dice with unclear faces 6. Unpainted Flag Edges 7. Factions 8. Sabot Bases The draw for the second round will take place on the Brews recording as well. There is no seeding within the seeds, the draw order of Round 2 will determine the remaining ties (QF,SF and Final) Those who just missed out are
And for those who are interested here are the also rans
There have been just shy of 3,000 votes, thanks to everyone who has voted, thanks to everyone who has joined in and commented, especially the ones who have told me that my definitions in my poll on my page were incorrect 🤣 See you all for Round 1 soon |

That's quite a list. It certainly contains my pet peeves. |

I was putting on for the very first time a Very Famous Game whose name you will recognize immediately, but I won't name. I was given the rules a few days before the game. I found NW Frontier in the appendix. Pathans were designated "Warband". Okay. We had played a sample Mexican American War game the week before, so we knew the flow. So, I laid out the game, made out cards. I KNEW that every term was conveniently listed on "page 43". The game started, I went to page 43 to explain Warband…. Not listed. Damn, these are Pathans! Wily Johnnie Pathan! I looked like a fool. Next Tuesday I found the definition. Not on Page 43. I suppose this comes in under "no index". A bad incomplete index is worse than none. 🤷 |

Not quite "card activation". But having to draw a card to do an obvious task. Like turning around to face an enemy in your rear, who can't draw a card to permit himself to charge you. Afterwards the GM was sorely disappointed that I did not praise the game. He was hurt. HURT, I say! |

Most of these might make my own list. But when "basing tanks" and "not basing tanks" both make the list--#16 and #29--we're discussing taste. |

Robert, it's a public vote with public nomination, some people hate those who base tanks, some people hate those who don't, that's how they both end up on a list Regards Ken |

Thanks for the update, Ken. Painting Portaloo? A nice way of saying someone's painting is excrement? |

Interesting the base or not base tanks / vehicles discussion. I have always based mine for two reasons: 1). To protect the wheels and treads from "aggressive" terrain. Treads sometimes have over 50 individual glued tread parts per side since I model and use 20mm or 1/72 for gaming. I can see the smaller 15/10mm individual single tread part models as un-based but not the larger "parts" sensitive which I use. 2). To even up the tanks / vehicles height level with the based infantry teams. |

Interesting, TMPWargamerabbit. I'd have agreed that tank-basing was largely a function of scale, but guessed the reverse. Very few NOT based 6mm and down, largely for ease of handling, or to get unit frontages right, and I'm not sure I've ever seen a based 1/72. Yarkshire's right, of course, if they've both gotten votes. But I'm always surprised how often wargamers adopt general rules How All Wargamers Should Do Things which are only really applicable for their favorite scale, period or rules. (Those outraged by rules without indexes probably don't play a lot of 2-4 page rules, for example.) |

Had to follow the comments and links to find out what a painting portaloo was. Seems a ridiculous waste of money, but not something that would bother me, what others get up to in the privacy of their own painting desk is their affair, and besides how would one ever know? I do think Indecisive Players, is the same issue as Slow Players but as the latter made the cut it should pick up the votes from the supporters of both. |

BillyNM Slow Players covers those who take 2 hours to set up when you have three hours to play or take an hour to do a move to get a draw. Indecisive Players are, well Indecisive. It's also worth noting for all that this is about "Pet Hates", it what drives you as an individual mad, with it being a public vote there is lots of variation. It's also not about adopting general rules and imposing them, it's supposed to be a bit of fun ! |

Painting Portaloolink Oh. Thanks, Ken. |

Ah, but are indecisive players sure they are indecisive, and are their opponents certain they're indecisive and not just deep thinkers? |

Basing 1/72mm tanks; yep I do. Stops them being racked up against each other, also stops the model from being handled. |
